This program has been enacted by the Federal Trade Commission in response to the growing threat of medical identity theft. Medical identity theft occurs when an individual obtains health care services by utilizing someone else’s name or insurance information. This law requires documentation outlining warning signs, or “red-flags,” and how the program will be effectively implemented upon detection.

  • A written identity theft prevention program that identifies and detects relevant red flags, and can prevent and mitigate identity theft.
  • Periodic updates of the written program
  • Staff training: medical specific on your new program
  • Documentation for oversight of your service providers
  • Information on how it will be administered, and how you will get the approval of your management.
