The Irvin Rutman Award is presented in recognition of the exemplary contributions of Dr. Irvin D. Rutman, Founding President of the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (USPRA) and recipient of the 1991 Beard Award. Dr. Rutman was the Executive Director of Horizon House for over 30 years and served as President of Matrix Research Institute. He played a key role in the development of the psychiatric rehabilitation profession.
USPRA and Irwin Siegel Agency, Inc. (ISA) present the Irvin Rutman Award each year to an executive director of a psychosocial program who demonstrates effective leadership in the psychosocial rehabilitation field and promotes the mission of USPRA. This award is presented at USPRA’s annual conference.

Criteria for Selection
The nominee must be a current executive director who is a member of USPRA and active at the local level. The nominee must also have clearly demonstrated leadership in the field in administering a psychosocial program.
The selection shall be based on contributions in the following areas.
- Exemplary management
- Leadership
- Board development
- Communication
- Quality programming of a psychosocial program.
2011 Recipient Named
The 2011 recipient of the Irvin Rutman Award is Dr. Tony Zipple, CEO of Thresholds, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Zipple is an exceptional example of leading an organization through an unprecedented fiscal and political crisis while implementing multiple new cooperative initiatives. As a firm believer in research and the implementation of evidenced based practices, Dr. Zipple has been instrumental in the formation of the Thresholds Institute.
