ISA held their annual Thanksgiving raffle, raising enough money to purchase a dozen turkeys to be donated to the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless (SCFH). The turkeys, along with several boxes of canned goods and other non-perishables donated by the ISA employees, will be used for SCFH’s annual Thanksgiving dinner and distributed to less fortunate families and individuals in the area. This year, the turkeys were purchased from a local business, Nat Kagan Meats located in Woodridge, NY.

While many of us are thinking about holiday gift shopping and meals with friends and family, others are wondering where they will get their next meal. SCFH is a great help to many of these families, but they operate the only soup kitchen in Sullivan County, which has the fourth highest rate of child poverty in New York State. To address this issue, SCFH goes beyond giving free meals by attempting to break the cycle of poverty that cause homelessness and hunger by developing individualized and community wide plans for disadvantaged people. SCFH serves breakfast and lunch five days a week, and provides pantry bags filled with nutritional food which are given out bi-weekly. In 2013 over 80,000 meals were provided to local disadvantaged people, but Kathy Kreiter, Director of SCFH, advised that these numbers are rising quickly. “Our pantries are being hit harder than ever before,” says Ms. Kreiter. While November is Homelessness Awareness month, this is a problem that requires constant attention.

“Unfortunately, there is an ever-growing need within our community. We all have a responsibility to contribute to this cause, whether it’s through donations, volunteer work, or helping to raise awareness. Our Thanksgiving food drive has become a tradition here at ISA that we are proud to continue.”
